Oneohtrix Point Never feat. Rosalia - "Nothing's Special"

Oneohtrix Point Never feat. Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) - "Tales From The Trash Stratum"

Following high profile film scores for Good Time and Uncut Gems, Oneohtrix Point Never released the expansive Magic Oneohtrix Point Never album in 2020. Across 17 tracks it featured a number of collaborators and featured artists, displaying his various modes of production and was featured in our Albums of the Year. Here we find two highlights from the release, on the A side a reworked version of the closing track with Rosalía - her fragile and emotive vocals are suspended over Oneohtrix’s retro-futurist production, on display high in the mix and treated with increasing decaying auto-tune. The B side sees a more harmonious take on the collaboration with Cocteau Twins’ legend Elizabeth Fraser, calming the complex disorder found in the first half of the album version and focussing on the mellifluous conclusion. Fraser's glassy glossolalia tones scamper across the spectrum in an extra-terrestrial, other-worldly and timeless fashion that mirrors Oneohtrix unique production. Two more inspired collaborations to add to Oneohtrix Point Never's impressive list that also includes ANOHNI, A. G. Cook and Iggy Pop.

Oneohtrix Point Never

Oneohtrix Point Never has always been meticulous and evocative, from the deconstructed plunderphonics of Replica and R Plus Seven, to the alt rock and chamber pop songwriting of Garden Of Delete and Age Of, to the symphonic nature of his scores for the Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems and Good Time. With the release of Magic Oneohtrix Point Never, Lopatin turns the dial towards his own inner frequencies, drawing from the origins of OPN as a means to discover a new found sense of levity and spirit during tumultuous times. The structure of Magic Oneohtrix Point Never “mOPN” loosely summons the broadcasting logic of radio dayparts, starting in the morning and ending overnight. It synthesizes all elements of his previous material to craft a cohesive humanistic masterwork, rendering the self-titling of the album as much a reference to his roots as to his entrenchment in the present moment.
